head-and-body length: 1.8 to 2 m. Weight: 150-300 kg.

It is the largest wild land animal in Japan. It is omnivorous and eats fruits, grass, insects, frogs, fish and carrion.

The sense of smell is particularly sensitive. From August to September, it appears in high altitude areas to eat berries of Sorbus matsumura,Bog bilberry, and Pinus pumila. It hibernate from November to April.
